Christian Alliance for Orphans – Summit

On May12th and 13th, I had the privilege of  attending the Christian Alliance for Orphans seventh annual Summit in Louisville, Kentucky. More than 1,500 people attended this year’s Summit, traveling from 46 states, and 7 countries. It was such a blessing to fellowship with so many other adoption professionals and adoptive families! I consumed a great deal of information during the two-day conference, and it was truly a beneficial experience. There were approximately 80 breakout sessions, which covered a multitude of topics including orphan care, special needs adoptions, attachment and bonding, church adoption ministries, post adoption issues, and so many more! I was able to attend sessions regarding attachment and bonding, new adoption legislation, Orphan Sunday, multicultural/multiracial adoptions, and post adoption support. I learned a great deal, and enjoyed gleaning from the wisdom of other professionals and their experience.

The conference also included general sessions with wonderful speakers. We heard from Dr. Russell Moore, Dr. Karyn Purvis, former Detroit Lion (and father of 13) Luther Ellis, Angela Minter, and Carolyn Twietmeyer. I also had the privilege, in the midst of so many people, to fellowship with some of ICM’s very own adoptive families who also made the trek to Louisville for the conference. We all had such a wonderful time!

The highlight of the conference for me was being able to attend the breakout sessions let by Dr. Karyn Purvis. Dr. Purvis is one of the nation’s most recognized experts in assisting adoptive and foster parents. She is the director of the Institute of Child Development at Texas Christian University, and has co-written The Connected Child: Bringing Hope and Healing to Your Adoptive Family. Dr. Purvis shared a great deal of information, as well as techniques for working with adoptive children. I have already put some of these techniques into practice, and have been blown away by the results!

I want to thank all of my adoptive families for allowing me the opportunity to take time away from the office to attend this amazing conference! If you would like information on attending next years’ Summit, you can go to the following website: http://www.christian-alliance-for-orphans.org/events/ summit. I hope to see you there!

In the meanwhile, stay tuned for more information gleaned from the conference.

God Bless,

Maria Gocke
