Things to Do While Waiting for Your Adoptive Placement

Things to Do While Waiting for Your Adoptive Placement:

  • Join an adoption support group.
  • Take a CPR or first-aid class.
  • Start a journal or scrapbook for your child to read when they are older.
  • Study adoption-related issues such as bonding and attachment.
  • If a first time parent, don’t forget to read the traditional parenting books as well.
  • Choose baby furniture; although you might not want to buy it just yet.  Walking by a ready baby room every day can sometimes make the waiting process more difficult.
  • Plan for the maternity leave.
  • Discuss and select names.
  • Research, discuss, and choose a pediatrician.
  • Prepare your health insurance forms so that the baby can immediately be added to your policy.
  • Raise adoption funds.
  • Arrange childcare for other children during travel time.
  • If you choose to cocoon your family after the adoption to assist with bonding and attachment, prepare family and friends ahead of time and explain the reasoning behind this to them.
  • Read “Trust, Hope, Pray” by Luke and Trisha Priebe.
  • Make a fire and emergency safety plan for your home.
  • Baby-proof the home (but not too early or you’ll just be frustrated by having to undo the latch on the fridge every time you want some milk).
  • Prepare your childcare arrangements for after the child is home.
  • Do any crazy-last-minute-once-in-a-lifetime type things (skydiving, bungee jumping, scuba diving with sharks, etc.).
  • Have a weekend away with your spouse.
