Empowered to Connect Conference

It is one of my favorite times of year… the Empowered to Connect Conference!  While there are several conferences each year, this year we are blessed to have one in Chicago, at The Chapel’s Barrington Campus.

If you are unfamiliar with Empowered to Connect, it is a resource for adoptive and foster parents. It was begun by Dr. Karyn Purvis, the Director of TCU’s Institute of Child Development. She has a team around her of professionals and adoptive families. Dr. Purvis is the author of The Connected Child, a must-read for any adoptive or foster family. Yesterday’s blog about finding the right professional included a video by Dr. Purvis. If you would like more information on what Empowered to Connect is, here is a link to their website:

If there is one great resource I could provide for each one of our families, it would be for them to attend this two day conference. My husband and I attended in 2011, and it was a very impactful weekend for the both of us, one that utterly shifted our parenting ideas.

The conference this year is held on April 19-20. Early bird registration for the conference is going on until February 19th. For more information on the conference and to register, you can go to the following website:

Here is what ICM would like to do for this conference. We would like to put together a carpool to travel to the conference together. The carpool would meet in Paxton, Illinois early on the morning of April 19th, and travel to Chicago. After the conference is over on Saturday, we would be traveling back that evening. We could all stay at the same hotel. I would really like for families to get to know one another, and build relationships. Hyatt Place in Hoffman Estates has the best rates and deals. Their kings and double rooms are $99.00. However, if we get eight or more rooms together, then I spoke with their sales associate and she would be willing to give us a better deal. She also said that if we get 10 or more rooms, then they would be willing to provide free shuttle service to and from the hotel. The hotel is a nice hotel that has a free hot breakfast.

I would also love if maybe our families could all do dinner together on Friday evening. ICM has wonderful families, and some of you can build lifelong relationships and friendships with one another.

I know some of you live in the Chicago area, so would not be using the carpool or the hotel, but I would still love for you to join us as part of the ICM group, and go to dinner with us Friday night if possible. Then again, maybe you need a weekend away with the spouse, and want to stay in a hotel for the evening.

If you are interested in going, please let me know as soon as possible, that way if we have enough people we can put together a block of rooms at the hotel and get a cheaper rate.

Our goal for this weekend is that our families get to build relationships with one another and be a support for one another, and that you greatly increase your “toolbox” as adoptive parents with the knowledge that you will gain from the conference.

Please contact me at adopt@icmfamily.org and we can begin setting things up.

We hope you all can make it!
