Adoption Tax Credit

During our staff meeting today, Dayna and I took time to sit down and complete the Adoption Learning Partners training regarding the adoption tax credit. This training was just produced this year, so it includes all the new laws and information regarding the tax credit. I would encourage all of you to take the course, as it is FREE and so very informative. Here is a link to the course: http://www.adoptionlearningpartners.org/catalog/courses/adoption-tax-credit.cfm

Here are a few pointers of useful information from the course:

  • You cannot file for the credit electronically… it must be paper filed.
  • The tax credit for domestic adoptions can be filed the year after the year you began incurring expenses.
  • The tax credit for international adoptions cannot be filed until the adoption is finalized.
  • Qualifying Expenses for the tax credit:
  1. Agency Fees
  2. Court Fees
  3. Attorney Fees
  4. Re-adoption expenses
  5. Training and Education (such as paid to Adoption Learning Partners
  6. Travel. Including meals and lodging. However, it does not include travel of relatives. For instance, if a spouse is not able to make the second trip so a grandparent travels with, that grandparents expenses cannot be counted.

We hope each one of you are able to take this Adoption Learning Partners FREE course. It is beneficial to every adoptive parent!
